TUMMY
TUCK
Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a “tummy
tuck”, removes excess skin and fat from the abdominal area.
The procedure can also address problems with the underlying
musculature to give you a flatter, firmer, tighter stomach
and thinner waist as well.
Surgical Procedure
Dr. Diaco will decide what type of incision is best for your
particular problem. In many instances, an incision is made
just above the pubic area and extends horizontally from one
hip to the other.
In rare cases, a vertical incision may be added, especially
if the patient already has a vertical abdominal scar. The
skin is then pulled together and the excess skin is removed.
Sutures are put in to help maintain stability, and with which
the incisions are closed.
If the muscles that support the abdominal wall have separated,
the operation may also include the surgical tightening of
these muscles.
Anesthesia
You will be under general anesthesia, which means being completely
asleep throughout the operation. General anesthesia is administered
by an anesthesiologist.
Surgery Location
The abdominal lipectomy procedure is done at the Surgery Center.
Surgery Time
The procedure takes about 3 hours.
Discoloration
Some swelling and discoloration are common with any type of
surgery. It usually diminishes in about 12 days, depending
on your skin type, age, and healing ability.
Postoperative care
You will have limited activity for the first 2 days after
surgery. Drains (plastic catheters) may be in place, exiting
from underneath the dressings, and may be attached to a small
pump or suction device. After you leave the office, you will
need to be pampered for another 3 weeks. Stitches are removed
in 10-14 days.
Questions Or Problems
We want you to call us with ANY questions or problems that
you may have. Your questions should be directed ONLY to Dr.
Diaco or the staff. Don't take "advice" from anyone
not directly concerned with your surgery ( i.e. mothers, friends,
past patients etc). You must remain within a reasonable traveling
distance of the office for one month.
You may also find answers to minor questions in our Frequently
Asked Questions section of this site.
Medications
Take all medications exactly as ordered, including those to
be taken before your surgery. Do not take aspirin or aspirin
containing compounds for 2 weeks before or 3 weeks after your

used instead. At first sign of hives or a rash, discontinue
ALL medications and call Dr. Diaco or his nursing staff immediately.
Possible Minor Complications
If your bandages loosen, or if you experience bleeding, drainage
or pain that can not be controlled by pain pills, call the
office immediately.
Scarring
Scars are permanent and fairly extensive, depending on the
type of incision Dr. Diaco chooses. Often there is a single
horizontal scar which can be covered by a bathing suit. Rarely,
there will also be a vertical scar. There is also a scar around
the umbilicus (navel).
Showers And Baths
You will be restricted to sponge baths until Dr. Diaco tells
you that the incisions may be bathed. This usually follows
complete suture removal.
Shampoo And Hair coloring
Coiffure procedures may be carried out any time after you
leave the hospital or patient care facility.
Social Activity
Take things easy for the first 3 weeks or so. Strenuous exercise
should be avoided for 6 weeks. This includes aerobics, swimming,
and body contact sports.
