RHINOPLASTY

Rhinoplasty, or nasal surgery, can reduce the overall size, improve the tip, remove a bump, narrow or widen the width, or even improve the angle between the nose and the upper lip. The idea is not to create a new nose, but rather to improve and enhance the one you have. Your final result will be a permanent improvement which will last the rest of your life.

It is unnatural for a nose to be exactly perfect. The nostrils are never exactly the same size or shape. A normal nose has many irregularities beneath the skin, some of which will remain even after a surgical procedure. It is important for you to be aware of these facts, since the patient tends to be more critical of the appearance of the nose following surgery.

Will Everyone Notice?
Many patients fear that the change will be so great that they'll be the subject of conversation among family and friends. Experience has shown that in a few weeks, these people won't remember exactly how you looked before. Those who are not aware of your surgery may not notice at all. If you want everyone to remark about your new look, you may be disappointed! And if you choose to point out the change, be ready for comments like,"I didn't see anything wrong with your nose before"...or "I liked your nose better the way it was".

Surgical Procedure
The incisions are made inside the nose. The nasal skin is lifted away from the cartilage and bone, and excess tissue is removed. To reform the nose contour, the nose may be shortened, the cartilage of the nose tip may be changed, and the nasal bones may be narrowed. Though the underlying bone and cartilage are reduced, the excess skin is elastic, and readapts to the new nose shape.

Some Rhinoplasty candidates also have difficulty in breathing. The operation to correct this can be performed at the same time. This portion of the procedure may be covered by your health insurance.

Anesthesia
General anesthesia will be used.

Surgery Location
The Rhinoplasty procedure is done at the Surgery Center. The rhinoplasty procedure takes about two hours. After a period of recovery following surgery, you'll go home.

Discoloration
Some swelling and discoloration of the face and eyelids are common with any type of facial surgery, but usually this is minor. It's usually most notable on the 2nd and 3rd days, and diminishes in about 12 days, depending on your skin type, age, and healing ability. Occasionally, the whites of the eyes may be bloodshot. Your upper lip may feel stiff and unnatural. Some numbness over the tip of your nose may be noticed for several weeks to several months, this is normal.

Postoperative care
Immediately after surgery, I'll place a restrictive splint on your nose. This splint will remain in position for about 7 days. For several days following surgery, there will packing inside your nose, causing you to breathe through your mouth. This may cause drying of the membranes of the mouth, similar to the effects of a minor cold. Your nose may feel congested for several weeks, due to internal swelling. To reduce the swelling, place ice packs over your eyes for 48 hours. Do not wear eyeglasses or sunglasses until I say it's okay. Although the major changes will be apparent when the splint is removed, additional small changes can occur for up to 12 months, especially around the tip of the nose.

Questions Or Problems
I want you to call me with ANY questions or problems you may have.
Your questions should be directed ONLY to me. Don't take "advice" from anyone not directly concerned with your surgery. You must remain within a reasonable traveling distance of my office for at least 2 weeks. You may also find answers to minor questions in our Frequently Asked Questions section of this site.

Medications
Take all medications exactly as ordered, including those to be taken before your surgery. Do not take aspirin or aspirin containing compounds for 2 weeks before or 3 weeks after your surgery. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Valadol, Tempra) may be used instead. At first sign of hives or a rash, discontinue ALL medications and call me immediately.

Possible Minor Complications
If you experience excessive bleeding from the nose, or pain that can not be controlled by pain pills, call me immediately.

Scars
Scars are on the inside of your nose. If a special operation was done to narrow your nostrils, you will have small scars at the base of your nostrils.

Showers And Baths
There are no restrictions on showering or bathing, but keep the nasal splint dry!

Makeup
Your usual makeup may be applied immediately.

Social Activity
Take things easy for the first 2 weeks or so. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4 weeks. This includes aerobics, swimming, and body contact sports.

Fees
In addition to the surgical fee, a fee is charged for general anesthesia. It does not include additional procedures.
