LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction is the removal of fatty deposits from the body
with the aid of a vacuum technique. The fat is removed via
a probe or "cannula" which
is
inserted through small incisions which are hidden as much
as possible. Liposuction techniques should emphasize not simply
removal of fat, but rather creation of form.
Most external areas of localized fat deposition in the body
can be potentially treated with liposuction. In women, the
most frequently treated areas are the outer thighs and hip
area, followed by the abdomen. In men, the abdomen and flanks
"love handles" are most popular. Other commonly
treated areas are the knees, back, chest, neck, and arms.
Ideally, men or women who are close to their ideal body weight
and who have localized areas of fat achieve the best results
with liposuction. People who are over their ideal body weight
may in some situations be candidates for liposuction as well.
Skin elasticity is important to allow the skin to shrink to
the new contour postoperatively. There are no age limits for
liposuction, rather the patient's health is the more important
consideration.
LASER RESURFACING
The introduction of the Ebrium laser allows resurfacing
of facial wrinkles without the prolonged redness found using
CO2 lasers. After undergoing treatment with the Ebrium laser,
patients are typically "red" for only about two
to three weeks instead of six to eight weeks as was the case
with CO2 lasers. In cases where the wrinkles are more superficial,
other options such as chemical peels and micro-dermabrasion
are available which allow patients to return to normal activities
even more quickly.
